If you have a drain that is clogged up with debris, and you need to clean the drain, you need to think carefully about what drain cleaning method you want to use to clean up your clogged drain. The three most popular sink drain cleaning methods are to use store-bought drain cleaners, hydro-jetting, or a drain snake.
Option #1: Store-Bought Drain Cleaner
One of the first options many people fall back onto is store-bought drain cleaners. It can be a good idea to have some store-bought drain cleaner under your sink so that you can have it as a back-up method to get rid of any clogs. Store-bought drain cleaner is great because it is convenient
The big drawback to store-bought drain cleaner though, is that it can also be really damaging to your pipes if you use it all the time. It is so strong it not only gets rid of clogs, but it can also wear away the material inside of your pipes. If you use a store-bought drain cleaner too much, it can actually cause damage to your pipes.
Option #2: Hydro Jetting
Hydro jetting is a process where an experienced plumber directs a high-pressure stream of water through your pipes. The high-pressure stream of water will dislodge the clog in your drain. One of the biggest advantages of hydro-jetting is that not only will it remove the targeted clog, but it will also clean and remove any other gunk that is inside of your drains.
The main drawback to hydro jetting is that it is a lot of pressure, and some pipes are not made to withstand that type of pressure and will get damaged by hydro jetting.
Option #3: Drain Snaking
The third option you have is to use a drain snake. A drain snake is one of the tried and true methods for getting rid of a clog. A drain snake allows you to feed a cord through your pipes until it meets resistance. Then there is a little attachment at the tip of the cord that you can move around and grab hold of the clog material. Then, you pull the snake back through the pipe, bringing the clog material with it. The snake can be used both to dislodge and pull out material that is clogging your drains.
A drain snake isn't damaging to your pipes like store-bought drain cleaner, and it isn't as forceful or as effective as hydro-jetting, making it the perfect in-between option. If you need help clearing a drain, it may be a good idea to work with local drain cleaning services.
