3 Things To Know About Keeping Your Bathroom Drains Clog-Free

Shannon Obrien

Do you get highly annoyed or frustrated when you have a slow-moving drain in your bathroom or a drain that is completely clogged? Clogged bathroom drains are extremely common, but did you know that you can prevent most clogs? Additionally, there are some things you can do that may help you clear slow-moving drains, or even clogged drains, in your bathroom. Here are three things to know about keeping your bathroom drains clog-free.

You should avoid putting certain things down your drain

Some of the leading causes of bathroom drain clogs include hair in the line and soap scum from shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and toothpaste. If these types of things get into your drains, they will begin accumulating inside the pipes, and you will eventually end up with a slow-moving drain or a clogged drain.

You can avoid a lot of clogs just by taking the right steps to protect your drains, and one of the best ways is by using screens on your drains. A screen is a small, inexpensive item you can buy or make that stops things from entering into the pipes. Using screens will block a lot of things that could potentially lead to a clogged pipe.

You should maintain your drain health

Secondly, instead of waiting for a problem to occur with your bathroom drains, you should take steps to maintain your drain health. The best and easiest option for this is by pouring hot water down the pipes every couple of weeks. Additionally, if you buy a small, plastic drain-cleaning tool, you could insert it in the drains from time to time to attempt to clean them out before they get clogged.

You can try at-home methods for clearing drains

Most plumbers will not recommend pouring drain-cleaning products into drains when they are clogged; however, you could try this if you want. The problem is that these products are extremely toxic and may damage your pipes. They may also burn your skin if you accidentally touch the product with your hand.

A better option is by using a plunger to unclog a drain instead of chemical drain cleaners. A plunger will help with most small clogs you experience. Secondly, pouring hot water into the drains can also clear out minor clogs you may experience in your drains.

If you are dealing with a stubborn clog that you cannot clear up yourself, contact a plumbing company, such as American Minuteman Sewer & Drain.
