Have A Pipe That Unexpectedly Burst? Know What To Do

Shannon Obrien

Coming home to discover a burst pipe in your home can be very upsetting. Not only does it cause a lot of damage to your home, but you'll be without water until you can get the pipe fixed. Here are some tips for dealing with a burst plumbing pipe in your home.

Shut Off The Electricity

You should shut off the electricity going to the places of your home that have the burst pipe. You do not know where that water is going and if it has reached an electrical outlet. It is always better to be safe than sorry, so shut down the electricity as a safety precaution. If you cannot reach the circuit breaker because it is in the room where the water is coming in, consider shutting down the electricity to your entire house.

Shut Off The Water

The next step should be to shut down the main water supply line flowing into your home, which will prevent more water from flowing out of the burst pipe. Your home should have a main water shutoff located in the home, which should be close to where the water meter is located. Some homes have a water shutoff located outside of the home. There should be a small metal cover that reveals a shutoff valve.

Call An Emergency Plumber

You will want to get the water working in your home as soon as possible, so contact an emergency plumber to make the repairs. The should be able to get someone out to your home on an evening or weekend so that you are not without water in your home for very long.

Clean Up The Water

Start the process of cleaning up the water so that you do not have major damage in your home. Your goal should get the space as dry as possible to remove all of the moisture in the air. You also want to prevent mold growth that occurs from water being in places that have not been cleaned up.

Contact Your Insurance Company

If you have a lot of damage in your home, it may be worth contacting your home insurance provider to make a claim. This will only be worth it if the cost to repair the pipe and clean up the damage in your basement is higher than what your home insurance deductible is. If not, then you are better off making repairs on your own.
