What Causes Constant Mold In The Home?

Shannon Obrien

If you have mold in your home, then you may need a remediation specialist to help you get rid of the mold as well as all of the damaged surfaces in your home. While this can help to remove the mold that has already formed, it does not stop new formations from developing. If you want to get rid of the problem for good, then you need a professional to locate the source of the moisture in your house. Keep reading to learn about a few possible causes of the moisture that a plumber or mold specialist will look for.

Pinhole Leaks

If you have an older home, then your basement may be quite wet. While a dehumidifier that is capable of removing 70 pints of water within a 24 hour period may be suitable to remove a lot of the moisture, it may not be enough. If your basement is still damp, then there is a good chance that general humidity is not the problem.

In many cases, an extremely wet basement is caused by small pinhole leaks in the pipes. This occurs in older homes that were constructed with steel pipes. As the pipes corrode internally, they start to thin and develop small openings. The leaks are often undetectable, but moisture will build on the surface of the pipes in the form of condensation. The water then evaporates and causes a moisture issue.

Even if you have copper pipes in your home, pinhole leaks can be an issue. This is often caused by high water pressure in the home and constant stress on your plumbing system. If small leaks are detected, then a plumber can use ultrasonic equipment to identify and locate them. Most leaks can be repaired easily with solder or the replacement of elbows and other fittings. However, an overall leak issue may require a repiping.

Poor Drainage

Another common mold cause is when water enters your basement through the foundation. While this may mean that you have cracks in the foundation that need to be repaired, water will often find its way into your home the longer it sits by your foundation. Water by the foundation means that you do not have adequate drainage to move water away from your house. In this case, drainage tile can be added to the exterior of your home.

Also, drainage systems that pull water away from the inside of the basement and through to your sewage system can be installed. The best option will depend on your property, the slope of the surrounding ground, the height of the water table, and the composition of the soil around your home.
